Landscape photography
Foto Factory uses landscape photography to capture and document natural scenery. This can range from vast, open expanses to more detailed subjects like a single flower. The purpose of landscape photography is to highlight the beauty and variation in nature, while our photographs also tell stories about the places we visit.
As landscape photographers, we rely on natural light, as artificial lighting is rarely used. This requires a deep understanding of light, composition, and perspective to achieve the best results. Patience and careful planning are crucial for us to be in the right place when the light is best. Often, it is precisely these special lighting conditions that make a landscape extraordinary and interesting to photograph.Read also our post on nature photography in Denmark.
Tips for good landscape photos
Before we delve into the different types of landscapes, we've gathered some tips to make your landscape photos exciting and sharp. With a simple standard lens and a tripod, you can start exploring nature and taking good landscape photos. Below is a list of five tips to make it more manageable.
- Use a telephoto lens for simple subjects: Traditionally, landscape photos are associated with wide-angle lenses, but it often yields interesting images if you zoom further into the landscape to photograph details. A telephoto lens is also good for isolating things in nature and avoiding distracting elements like power poles.
- Create depth in the photograph: To get an exciting landscape photo, it's important to create depth in the photograph. Without depth, the landscape photo quickly becomes flat and boring. However, it's often easy to create depth if you ensure there's a foreground, a middle ground, and a background in the image. The foreground can be branches or grass, the middle ground could be a landmark or a tree, and the background will often be the sky or the furthest nature.
- Get a sense of scale: It can be good to create a sense of scale in a landscape. This can be difficult without cars and other man-made objects in the picture. However, it can also provide a sense of scale where there are trees or other objects in the picture that create a relationship in terms of size.
- Use long exposure: If you go out and take pictures when the sun sets, you will find there is very little light. You can use this to get long shutter speeds when taking pictures. Try taking posters of the sea and see how the waves on the sea disappear, while rocks, for example, remain completely sharp. It is important that the camera is firmly planted on a tripod, otherwise the pictures will be blurry. You can also use a filter on the lens to stop the light entering the camera.
Different forms of landscape photography
There are many different forms of landscape photography adapted to various landscapes and natural elements. We also use different techniques when photographing to create the perfect mood in our landscape photos. Some of the most common forms of landscape photography are described below.
Panorama photography
Panorama photography is a form of photography where a wide view of a landscape or scene is captured by stitching together several individual photographs into a single image. Panorama photographs can be particularly good at showcasing the vast, open expanses typically found in nature. See our example from Helligdomsklipperne, which is a panorama photograph taken with a drone. We often use this technique with a drone to be able to print images taken with the drone in large sizes. A panorama photograph can also simply be a wide-view landscape image. However, technically, it is often taken with a special panorama function, also known from an iPhone. This function is also built into many newer mirrorless cameras. The panorama photograph is created by combining several individual photographs into one large photograph. This often requires careful planning of panorama photographs, as it is often the very special lighting conditions that make a landscape particularly interesting to photograph.

Forest photography
Forest photography is a type of landscape photography where we photograph forests and trees in their natural surroundings. We have a fondness for natural forests and forests that are allowed to develop naturally without forestry and timber production. This can range from Tisvilde Hegn to the large forests around Silkeborg.
Forest photography often requires a good understanding of light, composition, and perspective to achieve good results. Therefore, we also plan our trips to the forest carefully, as it is often the very special lighting conditions that make a forest particularly interesting to photograph.
To capture the forest in the most dramatic way, it can be a good idea to choose a slower shutter speed. This will make the tree leaves blur as they move in the wind, which can give the photograph a sense of movement and dynamism. It is almost always necessary to use a tripod to avoid blurry images. There is rarely much light, so we often use a long shutter speed and therefore the camera must be held completely still.
With forest photography, you have the opportunity to explore and capture the beauty of nature in a unique way. It is often a meditative experience to walk around in the forest to find good pictures. It is often completely silent, and only the sound of the wind and animals breaks the silence. For us, it's about documenting and preserving memories of places we visit. Waterfall photography
Waterfall photography is a form of landscape photography that focuses on waterfalls. This can range from large, impressive waterfalls to smaller, idyllic streams. There aren't really any waterfalls in Denmark, but if you visit the Faroe Islands or Greenland, there are many opportunities to find waterfalls.
Waterfall photography requires a good understanding of light, composition, and perspective to achieve the best results. As with all other nature photography, it is necessary to plan the photographs. It's about being at the waterfall at the exact right moment when the light is just right for the mood the photograph should convey. It's also necessary to keep an eye on rain and precipitation so that the amount of water is at a level that is sufficient to create the desired effect and has not completely dried up.
To capture the waterfall in the most dramatic way, a slow shutter speed is often used. This will make the water a blur as it flows downwards, which can give the photograph a sense of movement and dynamism. It can also be a good idea to add a tripod to avoid blurry images due to camera shake.
Waterfall photography is a fantastic opportunity to explore and capture the beauty of nature in a relaxing way.

Sea photography
Sea photography is a form of landscape photography where one photographs the sea and the coast. This can range from large waves, impressive coastlines, and smaller, idyllic beaches. There can be a lot of inspiration to draw from our Gotland posters which show the coast and landscapes of Gotland.
To capture the sea and coast in an atmospheric way, a slow shutter speed is often used, but to get the perfect photograph, it is important to experiment with the camera's shutter speed. A slow shutter speed can blur the water, giving the photograph a sense of movement and dynamism. Conversely, a fast shutter speed can capture the many details in the sea to create drama in the photograph.
Photography of the sea requires planning and preparation to achieve the perfect atmosphere. Elements such as ebb and flow have a great influence on the finished image, and it is usually necessary to consult a tide table to find the right time. It may also be that it needs to coincide with sunrise or sunset. In addition to these elements, the weather also plays a large role. Sometimes windy and cloudy conditions can be good, other times calm weather with sun.

Macro photography or Close-up
Macro photography is a form of photography where the focus is on capturing the small details of a subject, such as a single flower or an insect. Macro photography often requires a special lens that can focus closely on the subject, as macro photographs typically aim to reproduce the subject in 1:1 size or even larger.
Macro photography can be a very satisfying hobby, as it allows you to explore and capture the small details of nature in a unique way. It can also be a way to document and preserve memories of places you have visited, for example on holidays or hikes.
There are many different techniques that can be used in macro photography to achieve good results. It can be a good idea to experiment with different shutter speeds, ISO values, and apertures to find the right combination that suits the subject you are photographing. It may also be necessary to add a tripod to avoid blurry images due to camera shake.
