Landscape photography

Foto Factory uses landscape photography to capture and document natural scenes. This can range from large, open spaces to more detailed subjects like a single flower. The purpose of landscape photography is to highlight the beauty and variety of nature, while our photographs tell stories about the places we visit.

As landscape photographers, we rely on natural light, as artificial lighting is rarely used. It requires a deep understanding of light, composition and perspective to achieve the best results. Patience and careful planning are essential to being in the right place when the light is best. Often, it is precisely the special lighting conditions that make a landscape extraordinary and interesting to photograph.

Tips for good landscape photos

Before we get started with the different landscape types, we have collected some tips to make your landscape photos exciting and sharp. With a simple standard lens and a tripod, you will explore nature and take good landscape photos. Below we have a list of five tips that will make it easier.

  • Use a telephoto lens for simple subjects : Traditionally, landscape photography is associated with wide-angle lenses, but it often makes for interesting images if you zoom in more on the landscape to capture details. A telephoto lens is also great for isolating things in nature and avoiding distracting elements like power lines.
  • Create depth in the photograph : To get an exciting landscape image, it is important to create depth in the photograph. If there is no depth, the landscape image quickly becomes flat and boring. However, it is often easy to create depth if you make sure that there is both a foreground, a middle ground and a background in the image. The foreground can be branches or grass, the middle ground can be, for example, a sea mark or a tree, and the background will often be the sky or nature furthest away.
  • Get a sense of size : It can be good to create a sense of size in a landscape. It can be difficult without cars and other man-made things in the image. However, it can also give a sense of size where there are trees or other things in images that create a relationship in terms of size.
  • Use long exposure : If you go out and take pictures when the sun is setting, you will find that there is very little light. You can take advantage of this to get a long shutter speed when taking pictures. Try taking pictures of water and see how the waves on the sea disappear, while rocks, for example, are in sharp focus. It is important that the camera is firmly planted on a tripod, otherwise the pictures will be blurry. You can also use a filter on the lens to stop the light entering the camera.

Different types of landscape photography

There are many different types of landscape photography that adapt to different landscapes and natural elements. We also use different techniques when we photograph to create just the right atmosphere in our landscape images. We have described some of the most common types of landscape photography below.

Panoramic photography

Panoramic photography is a form of photography where you photograph a wide view of a landscape or scene by combining several individual photographs into a single image. Panoramic photographs can be particularly good at showing the large, open spaces that are typically found in nature. See our example from Helligdomsklipperne, which is a panoramic photograph taken with a drone. We often use this technique in conjunction with the drone to be able to print the images taken with the drone in large sizes. Read more about drone photography .

A panoramic photograph can also simply be a landscape image with a wide view of a landscape. But technically it is often taken with a special panorama function, which is also known from an iPhone. The function is also built into many newer mirrorless cameras. The panoramic photograph is created by combining several individual photographs into one large photograph. This usually requires that you plan your panoramic photographs carefully, as it is often the very special lighting conditions that make a landscape particularly interesting to photograph.

Forest photography

Forest photography is the form of landscape photography where we photograph forests and trees in their natural surroundings. We have a preference for natural forests and forests that are allowed to develop in a natural way without forestry and forestry. It can be anything from Tisvilde Hegn to the large forests around the Silkeborg lakes .

Forest photography often requires a good understanding of light, composition and perspective to achieve good results. That's why we plan our trips to the forest carefully, as it is often the very special lighting conditions that make a forest particularly interesting to photograph.

To capture the forest in the most dramatic way, it can be a good idea to choose a slower shutter speed. This will turn the leaves of the trees into a blur that moves in the wind, which can give the photograph a sense of movement and dynamism. It is almost always necessary to use a tripod to avoid blurry images. It is rarely very bright so we often use a long shutter speed and therefore the camera must be held completely still.

Forest photography gives you the opportunity to explore and capture the beauty of nature in a unique way. It is often a meditative experience to walk around the forest to find the good pictures. It is often completely quiet and only the sound of the wind and the animals breaks the silence. For us, it is about documenting and preserving memories of the places we visit. It is about being at the waterfall at the right moment, the light is just right for the mood you want the photograph to have. It is also necessary to keep an eye on rain and precipitation so that the amount of water is at a level where there is enough water to create the desired effect and is not completely dried out.

To capture the waterfall in the most dramatic way, a slow shutter speed is often used. This will turn the water into a blur flowing downwards, which can give the photograph a sense of movement and dynamism. It may also be a good idea to add a tripod to avoid blurry images due to camera shake.

Marine photography

Marine photography is a form of landscape photography where you take pictures of the sea and the coast . It can be anything from big waves, impressive coastlines and smaller, idyllic beaches. There can be a lot of inspiration to be found in our Gotland posters showing the coast and landscapes of Gotland.

To capture the sea and the coast in an atmospheric way, slow shutter speeds are often used, but to get the perfect photograph it is important to experiment with the shutter speed on the camera. A slow shutter speed can blur the water, giving the photograph a sense of movement and dynamism. Conversely, a fast shutter speed can capture the missing details in the sea to create drama in the photograph.

Ocean photography requires planning and preparation to get the right mood. Elements such as tides and ebbs have a big influence on the finished image and it is usually necessary to look at a table of high and low tides to find the right time. It may also be that it should coincide with sunrise or sunset. In addition to these elements, the weather also plays a big role. Sometimes it can be good with wind and clouds, other times calm weather with sun.
